CUESTA GRADE — A vehicle fire near the top of Cuesta Grade spread to a nearby hillside, sparking a large vegetation fire around 4:20 p.m. Friday.
According to Cal Fire, the fire had grown to 50 acres as of 5:30 p.m. and skies in the North County were gray with smoke.
Traffic on Northbound Highway 101 was down to one lane and traffic was backed up for miles.
Another wildfire in southern San Luis Obispo County, off of Highway 166, grew from 500 acres to 3,000 acres during the course of the afternoon and the smoke from the combined fires caused air quality officials to issue an alert advising residents to stay inside if possible.
