Roy Guy, Sr., 88, born on February 10, 1929 in Santa Margarita, CA passed away and went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 8, 2017 in a San Luis Obispo hospital.
At his request, a small private family graveside service was held on Friday, October 20, 2017 at Atascadero Pine Mountain Cemetery, lead by Chaplain Jim Wells of Atascadero Bible Church, where Roy was a member for many, many years.
Roy loved his home in Atascadero and spent his lifetime in the area, only leaving to serve a tour of duty in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Many of his ancestors are recorded as being residents of the Central Coast as far back as the 1850’s.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic for H.D. Peterson for 28 years and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 12. He owned and operated his own welding shop in Atascadero and despite his talent for working with his hands, wrought iron and wood working were just hobbies. He was well known for his avid love of auto racing, having been one of the founding fathers of the Atascadero Speedway. He not only drove and worked on his own super modified open wheel cars, but encouraged his boys to do the same. Well after his retirement as a driver, he continued to own and build race cars for them. He had accumulated a large collection of trophies both as a driver and car owner. Over the past few years, he loved following NASCAR and would critique all of the drivers every week. He also loved watching old western movies and, of course, football. He had an unparalleled flair for restoring classic cars. He reconstructed and fully restored a Ford Model A literally from boxes of parts, for which he won several 1st Place Awards and trophies for his achievement.
Roy and Joy were both licensed private pilots and owned several Piper Cub planes over the years. They cherished travelling, whether it was visiting Jalama Beach Park locally or family in and out of CA, auto race tracks and many of the National Parks all over the United States in both the plane and their motorhome.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 20 years, Joyce (Joy) Marie Guy; his parents, Hazel and Lester Guy, Sr-; his brother, Lester Guy, Jr.; his sister and brother-in-law, Bessie and Jodie Coley; his son Roy Guy, Jr. and his daughter Cathy Jensen, all of Atascadero; and his sister, Laurel Schubert of Great Falls, MT.
Roy is survived by his daughter Rhonda (Richard) Crutchfield of Paso Robles; his son Robert E. (Dianne) Guy of Atascadero; his step-daughter, Lynn Allmandinger of Palmdale, CA; his grandchildren, Roy Guy, III; Megan Jensen; Aaron (Melissa) Crutchfield; Ryan Guy; Sarah Guy; Jake Guy; Brianna Marie (Wyatt) Cromer of Los Olivos and Eugene Curtis Hill, IV of Lake Tahoe, CA; his great-grandchildren, Christopher Piccus, Sierra Mackiewicz, Cambria Guy, Andrew, Nathaniel and Madeline Crutchfield, Georgia Guy, Gaia and Sevin Scott, Jacob Guy, Jr., Walter Eugene Cromer and Bea Morgan Cromer.
